Did you know you can read Kindle books on your iPhone?! Mind. Blown. I discovered this about six months ago, and since then it’s been a blessing and a curse. I’ve always been a hardcore REAL BOOKS ONLY holdout, insistent that words on paper are the only truly satisfying way to experience a great read. For the record, I still believe this and plan to one day add my most recent favorites to my collection in paperback or hardcover form,…
Life Lately
Fashion these days. In the words of the very millennials whose sartorial choices I find so problematic, I just cannot. Are there any other words to describe this? Being on the verge of 30 has got to be the most identity-crisis-inducing phase ever when it comes to what to wear. One arm in a tailored blazer, the other in the spaghetti strap of a crop top (which, by the way, still make me squeamish). When browsing the ‘New Releases’ section…
The last week has been rough. I say that as a white, privileged, middle-class female struggling to process not only how I feel about the events in Charlottesville, but how I’m supposed to feel. Or, more accurately, how I’m supposed to respond. I feel disgusted. I feel angry. I feel, in a not-so-small-way, like I’m part of the problem. Wedding planning is a hot topic in the blogging world, and yet it’s always been one that bores me to tears to read about. It’s not that I’m not interested in what other brides choose to do for their weddings. I’m actually quite nosy about it. I want to judge your garish bridesmaid dresses and see whether he cried during the first look. It’s just that there are so. many. details. It’s no surprise, then, that the details are what’s…
Dear August in New York, I’m in love with you. Everyone who told me the heat and the steaming piles of garbage were going to be unbearable has clearly never spent a summer at the gates of hell, AKA South Florida. Dear motorcycle riders, nobody thinks it’s cool when you blast out our eardrums taking off from a stoplight. It makes me want to go buy a car again just so I can ‘tap’ you with it. #ouch Dear Time…
So, Latvians have a holiday called ‘John Day.’ As you might imagine, being in a relationship with a Latvian named John is very exciting when this holiday rolls around. Technically the holiday is called Jāņi, and it celebrates the summer solstice. The traditional celebration involves wearing flower crowns, singing songs, staying up all night and jumping over bonfires. I suppose there’s a bit of alcohol involved, too. All in all, a pretty sweet holiday. And there’s one more major Jāņi…
Adulthood is hard. Adult friendships are even harder. There are those ride-or-die friends who feel effortless, the ones you automatically include in the head count for your barbecue or birthday party because duh, they’ll be there by default. There are the old friends, the ones whose couch (or, if they’re living that fancy life, guest bedroom) you know you can crash on without question when you’re in their city or hit up to go do weird hometown stuff when you’re…
