Let’s face it, ladies. In these trying times, what we need are strong female role models who will act as trailblazers for our gender and inspire us to be the best versions of ourselves. Michelle O and Queen Oprah are doing an okay job I guess, but I know a tribe of women who can really light a fire underneath us. They’re beautiful. They’re wealthy. They’re gracious. Well, two out of three ain’t bad. They’re the Real Housewives of Bravo,…
Life Lately
If somebody could explain to me how Christmas is in five days, that’s be spectacular. I feel like I’ve been living from the laundry basket to the suitcase and back again for the past two months. Somehow the pile in the laundry basket never gets smaller, only bigger with each passing week, but that’s a different rant for a different post. Time is flying by and I can’t even remember what I had for lunch yesterday let alone what I…
Can we go back to the days before smartphones, back before anyone could reach out and pop into your inbox or worse, your text messages at any hour of the day or night, expecting—no, demanding a response? I miss the days before voicemail was a thing. The days when if you wanted to avoid someone you could—gasp—simply not answer the phone. Because it was a house phone. You could let it ring and ring, and that might be because you…
I moved to New York City at arguably the worst possible time for a Floridian, at the start of December just before the weather started to dip below the freezing mark. I’d lived in a cold climate before, but when I’d settled in Florida a few years earlier I was fairly certain it was for good and said sayonara to most of my winter gear. Whoops. Not only did I have to completely re-stock my closet for snow and ice…
One of my friends recently posted something on Facebook that stopped me in my tracks (thanks, Jose!). He wrote, “Remind yourself that sometimes doing too much can be as damaging as doing too little. Your mind and body do have their limits.” Actual footage of my reaction: When I saw it, I was in the middle of doing one of my most favorite things, standing in front of a laundromat washing machine stewing. The machine had had two minutes left…
Ever since John and I started dating, one of our favorite things to do together has been to get out and do things outdoors. His idea of a good time is less ‘dinner and a movie’ and more ‘ten-mile mountain trek’, which explains why we so frequently meet in the middle at ‘leisurely hike and beer.’ It works. This also means he can be tricky to shop for. The traditional Esquire-esque gift guide staples like a leather satchel (why?) or…
My fiancé was right. Seasons really do make a difference in how you experience life. Before moving to New York in December of 2016, we spent the prior three years in South Florida where there are two seasons: hot as $%*&, which covers 85% of the calendar year, and pleasant, which happens for maybe six weeks between January and February and accounts for the remaining 15%. Don’t get me wrong, with the exception of getting caught in the pop-up rainstorms…
